GLP-1 medications are changing far more than the number on the scales. As their use becomes more widespread, we're learning more about the broader physical, psychological and social effects that can accompany significant weight loss—including changes in confidence, identity, relationships and intimacy.
I was pleased to contribute to this Guardian article exploring these less-discussed aspects of treatment.
One of the most important messages is that obesity treatment is about much more than prescribing a medication. These therapies work best when they are part of comprehensive, person-centred care that includes behavioural support, nutrition, physical activity, and ongoing follow-up.
Every person's experience is different. While these medications can be life-changing for many people living with obesity, it's important that we continue to have open, evidence-based conversations about both their benefits and their potential challenges.
If you're considering treatment, or are already taking a GLP-1 medication, it's worth discussing these broader impacts with your healthcare team—not just the expected weight loss.
Thank you to The Guardian for highlighting this important conversation.
