Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do the clinicians at Perth Weight Clinic understand obesity?
Yes. At Perth Weight Clinic, you’ll be treated by a multidisciplinary team of medical and allied health practitioners regulated by the Australian health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA). This includes medical practitioners, accredited practising dietitian, clinical psychologist, physiotherapist, and practice nurses. We do not use health coaches or other non-AHPRA-registered practitioners because we believe in delivering the highest quality of clinical care for our clients. Hundreds of clients have been safely and effectively treated at our clinic, benefiting from our comprehensive and expert approach.
  • What type of appointments do you offer?
Perth Weight Clinic offers in-person consultations for all clients. Medicare rebates are available for eligible Medicare cardholders. Phone appointments can be offered for follow-up consultations where appropriate and for convenience to you.
  • Can I get a Medicare rebate for my appointment?
Yes, Medicare rebates are available to all Medicare card holders. However, please note that Perth Weight Clinic is a private billing clinic, and we do not offer concessions for weight management consultations for concession card holders.
  • What treatments are available at Perth Weight Clinic?
At Perth Weight Clinic, we offer personalised treatments tailored to your unique health needs and goals. We understand that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for weight management. Our approach focuses on achieving your goals through the four pillars of health: nutrition, activity, sleep, and wellbeing. As medical and allied health practitioners, we provide a range of evidence-based treatments for weight loss, including lifestyle changes, medications, and advice on bariatric metabolic surgery. After a comprehensive consultation and metabolic health assessment, we’ll guide you in choosing the most suitable treatment options for your needs. Medications All TGA-approved medications for weight loss are available at Perth Weight Clinic. These medications may be prescribed following an in-person consultation with one of our clinicians and where we assess if they are appropriate for you. Due to restrictions, we cannot discuss treatment options without a consultation. Bariatric Metabolic Surgery For those considering bariatric metabolic surgery, we work closely with a network of trusted bariatric surgeons across Perth. We’ll advise you on the most appropriate treatment options and help determine the best approach based on your needs.
  • Is the treatment provided at Perth Weight Clinic safe?
At Perth Weight Clinic, all of our practitioners are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA). We do not employ health coaches and other non-clinical and non-AHPRA registered staff to ensure that you receive only the highest quality of clinical care from qualified and trusted clincal professionals. If pharmaceutical treatment for medical weight loss is recommended by your medical practitioner, we prescribe only TGA-approved medication. If referral to a medical, surgical or allied health practitioner is recommended, we refer only to AHPRA-registered practitioners. We are committed to patient safety and regularly audit our clinical practices to maintain high standards of care. We actively seek patient feedback to continuously improve our services - if you would like to provide feedback, make comments, or share any concerns about our services or a practitioner, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at info@perthweightclinic.com.au. We value your input and are dedicated to ensuring your experience with us is safe and positive.
  • Am I eligible for weight loss treatment?
Chronic weight management for overweight and obesity goes beyond just prescribing medication. Our skilled team will advise on treatments that are appropriate for you with a focus on improving health, not just loss. We support all aspects of your health, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and wellbeing. Before recommending any treatment, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of your health and needs to ensure the treatment we offer is appropriate and safe. Regulations prevent us from advising on whether pharmaceutical treatment will be prescribed without having a consultation with you.
  • Will you tell me to just eat less and exercise more?
No! For decades, healthcare providers and public health programs have told people with obesity that eating less and exercising more will lead to weight loss. While this may work in the short term, the body adapts which causes many individuals to regain weight over time. This creates a frustrating cycle of weight loss and weight regain, leaving many feeling hopelessthrough no fault of their own. At Perth Weight Clinic, we understand obesity as a chronic disease. Our practitioners are skilled and experienced managing obesity in addition to the full spectrum of chronic diseases associated with obesity, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. Personalised treatment is the key to lasting weight loss and this is central to our approach. We do no expect you to rely on willpower, extreme motivation, or restrictive eating to lose weight. Instead, we focus on providing treatments that promote healthy, sustainable weight loss that brings meaningful results.
  • I have medical problems related to my weight. Can you manage these?
Yes, absolutely. As AHPRA-registered medical and allied health practitioners, we are able to diagnose and treat medical and surgical conditions outside of obesity. Weight management is not just about losing weight—it’s about improving overall health. Many of our clients benefit from treatment for co-existing health conditions alongside their weight management journey.
  • Should I choose a Telehealth weight loss clinic?
In our opinion, whilst Telehealth-only providers offer a convenient service to access weight loss medication, obesity is a complex and serious medical condition which requires a comprehensive assessment and clinical examination, not questionnaire-based box ticking before issuing a prescription for a weight loss medication. We belive any practitioner providing medical weight loss treatment must also be experienced in the management of chronic diseases and mental health conditions associated with obesity, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, mental health conditions, menopause/peri-menopause, male hypogonadism, and sleep disorders. This is why we choose to provide high quality and comprehensive in-clinic services for all patients for initial consultations with the option of phone consultations for follow-up care where appropriate for your convenience.
