Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do the clinicians at Perth Weight Clinic understand obesity?
Yes. At Perth Weight Clinic, you will be treated by a multidisciplinary team of medical and allied health practitioners regulated by the Australian health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA). This includes medical practitioners, accredited practising dietitian, clinical psychologist, physiotherapist, and practice nurses. We do not use health coaches or other non-AHPRA-registered practitioners because we believe in delivering the highest quality of clinical care for our clients. Hundreds of clients have been safely and effectively treated at our clinic, benefiting from our comprehensive and expert approach.
  • What type of appointments do you offer?
Perth Weight Clinic offers in-person consultations. Medicare rebates are available for eligible Medicare cardholders. Phone appointments can be offered for follow-up consultations where appropriate and for convenience to you.
  • Can I get a Medicare rebate for my appointment?
Medicare rebates are available to all Medicare card holders. Please note Perth Weight Clinic is a private billing clinic. We do not offer concessions for consultations to concession card holders.
  • What treatments are available at Perth Weight Clinic?
We offer personalised treatments tailored to your unique health needs and goals following your assessment. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for weight management and good comprehensive clinical care goes beyond a prescription for a weight loss medicine. We may advise several evidence-based approaches to weight loss and improved health including lifestyle changes, medication, and bariatric metabolic surgery. We will guide you in choosing the most suitable treatment options for your needs and goals. Medications Due to regulatory restrictions, we cannot discuss treatment options without a consultation. All TGA-approved medications for weight loss are available at Perth Weight Clinic but an assessment is needed to determine eligibility. Bariatric Metabolic Surgery We work closely with a network of trusted metabolic bariatric surgeons across Perth. We can advise on the most appropriate treatment options and help determine the best approach based on your needs.
  • Is the treatment provided at Perth Weight Clinic safe?
All of our medical and allied health practitioners are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) to ensure you receive only the highest quality of clinical care from trusted professionals appropriately experienced and qualified in weight management. We prescribe only TGA-approved medication licensed and indicated for their intended use. We are committed to patient safety and regularly audit our clinical practices to maintain high standards of care. We actively seek patient feedback to continuously improve our services - if you would like to provide feedback, make comments, or share any concerns about our services or a practitioner, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at info@perthweightclinic.com.au. We value your input and are dedicated to ensuring your experience with us is safe and positive.
  • Am I eligible for weight loss treatment?
Our skilled team will advise on treatments that are appropriate for you with a focus on improving health, not just weight loss. We support all aspects of your health, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and wellbeing. Before recommending any treatment, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of your health to ensure the treatment we recommend is appropriate and safe.
  • Will you tell me to eat less and exercise more?
No! For decades, healthcare providers and public health programs have focused on eating less and exercising more to achieve weight loss. Whilst this may work in the short term, the body adapts which causes many individuals to regain weight over time. This creates a frustrating cycle of weight loss and weight regain, leaving many feeling hopelessthrough no fault of their own. We understand obesity as a chronic disease. Our practitioners are skilled and experienced in managing obesity in addition to the full spectrum of chronic diseases associated with obesity, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. Personalised treatment is the key to lasting weight loss and this is central to our approach. We do no expect you to rely on willpower, extreme motivation, or restrictive eating to lose weight. Instead, we focus on providing treatments that promote healthy, sustainable weight loss that brings meaningful results.
  • I have medical problems related to my weight. Can you manage these?
Yes. We are AHPRA-registered medical and allied health practitioners and are able to diagnose and treat medical and surgical conditions related to obesity. Weight management is not just about losing weight—it’s about improving health. Many of our clients benefit from the treatment of co-existing health conditions alongside weight management. Our practitioners are appropriately experienced and skilled in managing a wide range of medical and psychiatric conditions including diabetes, metabolic disease, kidney and liver disease, and mental health conditions including depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
  • Should I choose a Telehealth weight loss clinic?
Whilst Telehealth-only providers offer a convenient service to access weight loss medication, obesity is a complex and serious medical condition which requires a comprehensive assessment and clinical examination. We belive any practitioner providing medical weight loss treatment must also be experienced in the management of chronic diseases and mental health conditions associated with obesity, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, mental health conditions, menopause/peri-menopause, male hypogonadism, and sleep disorders. We choose to provide only high quality and comprehensive care in clinic for all clients for initial consultations to enable us to gather a complete picture of your health. For follow-up consultations, telemedicine appointments are available where appropriate for your convenience.
  • I am a medical or surgical specialist. How can you help?
We work alongside you to improve the health and wellbeing of your patient with a focus on weight management to improve health. We undertake a comprehensive assessment for conditions associated with excess adiposity including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, liver and kidney disease. Our goal is to support your patient to improve physical and mental health. This results in reduced anaesthetic risk, better post-operative recovery, and better outcomes for those living with chronic diseases.
