What treatments are available at Perth Weight Clinic? We personalise treatment according to your health needs and goals. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for weight management. Treatment is goal-oriented and encompasses the four pillars of health - nutrition, activity, sleep and wellbeing. All anti-obesity medications (weight loss drugs) licensed for use in Australia are available through Perth Weight Clinic as prescription medications. Due to AHPRA regulations, we are unable to discuss treatment with you without a consultation.

Are the clinicians at Perth Weight Clinic experts in obesity? Some online services offering weight loss medications are little more than online prescription services for the 'skinny jab' with few checks. Many of the healthcare practitioners working in these clinics are not medical practitioners and may have only started to care about obesity when they realised there was a commercial benefit to it. Dr Mark Mellor founded Perth Weight Clinic in 2022 after years of developing his expertise in obesity medicine and metabolic health. He has worked hard to further his knowledge having completed an obesity mentorship program and Postgraduate Diploma in Obesity and Weight Management. Mark was elected to the role of WA lead for the RACGP obesity specific interest group in 2022. He advocates for access to treatment for people with overweight and obesity, develops training programs for healthcare practitioners, and is frequently invited by healthcare organisations, pharmaceutical companies and conference organisers to advise and educate on obesity management. Hundreds of clients have been treated safely and effectively at the multi-disciplinary Perth Weight Clinic. Our team consists of medical practitioners, an accredited practising dietician. a clinical psychologist and practice nurses. Mark is well-regarded as an expert obesity doctor by peers and continuously strives to develop his expertise through rigorous engagement with continued professional development activities. Given this, you can be assured that you will receive only the best care at Perth Weight Clinic. See his list of achievements in the obesity field here.

Will you tell me to just eat less and exercise more? No! For decades, healthcare practitioners and public health programs have been telling people with obesity that if they eat less and exercise more they will lose their weight and live happily ever after. This messaging is fundamentally wrong and the science (and the fact that two-thirds of adult Australians have overweight or obesity) proves it. Obesity is a disease. It needs to be properly assessed and managed comprehensively to support long term health gains.
-
I have medical problems related to my weight. Who will manage these?Dr Mellor is a specialist general practitioner. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and is licensed and accredited to treat any medical condition in particular the vast array of conditions associated with and caused by obesity. For clients with complex obesity (e.g., those with chronic health conditions other than obesity), an in-person consultation at Perth Weight Clinic in Butler is often needed. If you live far away and it is not possible for you to come to our clinic, we will communicate with your local doctor to ensure you are treated safely and effectively.
-
Will I be eligible for weight loss treatment?Weight loss treatment is more than just a prescription. At Perth Weight Clinic, we manage all aspects of your health including the four pillars of nutrition, exercise, sleep and wellbeing. For some people, medication may be appropriate, but for others it may not. For example, some people may benefit from metabolic bariatric surgery whereas others may benefit from psychological-based therapies. A comprehensive assessment of your health is required before a clinical decision can be made about treatment considered appropriate for you. Regarding anti-obesity medication in Australia, these are licensed for people with a BMI over 27 with at least one weight-related co-morbidity or BMI over 30 with or without weight-related co-morbidities.
-
Can I get a Medicare rebate?Medicare rebates are available for all in-person consultations including your initial consultation as a new client. Medicare rebates are available for online consultations only if you have been assessed in-person at Perth Weight Clinic. Medicare does not allow clients to receive a rebate if they have not been assessed in-person in preceding 12 month period. You can still book an online consultation even if you are not eligible for a Medicare rebate but your consultation will be fully privately charged.
-
What type of appointments do you offer?Perth Weight Clinic has recently started offering online Telehealth consultations for clients wanting to improve their health. For busy clients and those living in regional areas, online consultations enable remote access to high quality clinical care.
